Letter from the President

Like our collective tri season, your CMC board is off and running!  The March edition of the e-board meeting was filled with plans designed to encompass sport, fitness and camaraderie.  If you weren’t at the last meeting, we had big news to share with you.  Lise Nyrop, triathlete extraordinaire, club member extraordinaire has stepped down as CMC president to focus on a career change.  Lise’s accomplishments span the gambit of achievement from sprint triathlete to Ironman finisher.  She has also worked HARD at every level of board and member involvement.   It takes a lot to make the club go ‘round and the good news is she’s not going anywhere.  Expect to see her work on committee efforts later this year.  Finally, she has left the board in good shape in more ways than one, but especially financially.  When you see her, please thank her for all her efforts.

Other news:  The March general membership meeting nearly filled the back room at Harpo’s as members are shaking off cabin fever and getting pumped about the upcoming season.  The meeting was packed with information and concluded with a great ‘dry’ swim clinic by David Townsend.  Congratulations to all those who have recently competed in races that included 5K’s, off-road runs, off-road triathlons AND half and full marathons.  The level of achievement by our members is truly remarkable!

As you continue to gear up for the season, please remember fellow CMC members (especially new members) by posting your workouts to the list serve with distances and paces.  Thanks to all, and if you have any ideas or suggestions to make the club better or more fun please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of your  board members!

Social

After numerous individual questions, Karen and Steve Jones hosted a demonstration on home brewing on March 13, 2011. Turnout was good, even though the weather was a little cooler than we were hoping for considering a lot of the brewing is done outside. Karen and Steve took everyone through the steps of brewing an all-grain Double Chocolate Stout and Bob Martin graciously brought over his equipment and demonstrated how to brew an extract Cream Ale. We also had a large variety of different beer styles for everyone to sample and hopefully expand their beer palate. Thanks to everyone that made it out!

To kick the multi-sport season off within a laid-back atmosphere, Karen Roberts is spearheading a practice duathlon on March 27 at 1pm.  We’ll be meeting at Derby Ridge Elementary and riding/running the MaxTrax course.  No traffic control will be provided so you will have to ride/run at your own risk.  We will have the “transition area” monitored however.  Contact Karen Roberts (klroberts@socket.net) for more information.

Opportunities to get out on the Missouri River to help U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service crews fish for the endangered pallid sturgeon.  The annual ‘Pallid Brood stock Roundup’ is held each year from March 29 – May 7th.  You are invited to volunteer at any point during these dates, however coordinated intensive efforts will be from March 29 (Tues)-April 2 (Sat); April 4(Tues)-April 9 (Sat) and May 3(Tues)-May 7 (Sat). Contact Wyatt Doyle, FWS, (wyatt_doyle@fws.gov or at 573 234 2132 x 111).

Jay Dix

SAVE THE DATE Saturday, May 7th at Flat Branch Park Columbia Multisport Club presents Jay Dix Challenge to Cure 5K walk/run and 10K run.  The Jay Dix’s committee has been very busy getting all the details together for CMC only community event. Because this is CMC only Community Event we would like full support from the members of the club.  We would love to see all members either participant in the event (register at challengetocure.com) or volunteer by going through our online volunteer form (http://www.challengetocure.com/volunteer.shtml). The Cure has added a new premier sponsor, The Stansberry and Rickman Team at Stifel, Nicolaus and Company Inc. We would not want to forget our sponsors that have given to the event year after year: Columbia Center for Dentistry, Alpine Shop, MEM, Peak Performance, The Surgery Center, Stifel, Nicolaus and Company, Wilson’s Total Fitness, University of Missouri Hospital and ESS. We could not produce the event with the help of our fine sponsors.  We are confident that 2011 will be the best year for Jay Dix Challenge to Cure so don’t miss out. I hope to see you on Saturday May 7th!

CMC KidZ

The CMC Kidz committee has been planning some great events for the 2011 seasons.  Some of the events that the kids will get to enjoy: Kids Track Night, Rockbridge Orienteering, CMC KidZ/ CMC PetZ/ family ride on the Katy Trail and Slip N Slide Hill repeats.   The first event will be Tuesday June 14th.  If you know some kids that would like to be a part of CMC KidZ, but their parents are not CMC members, they can join CMC Kidz for just $10 for the entire season; this includes 7 group activities and a t-shirt.    If you would like to be part of this committee we would love to have you join us, just send an email to Chrissie McKinney at chrissiebishop@aol.com.

PR

The PR committee is hard at work getting a list of companies together to go and present the opportunity of Jay Dix to. If you think your company would be interested please let Nancy know. If you would like to present it to your own place of employment we have a quick presentation we can get to you to share along with registration forms and 5k training plans. We would also like to get more recognition for those that travel to do races and to those that perform really well in races. Please keep us posted when you do so we can see about getting it in the Tribune under the Kudos section.

Membership

The membership committee is gearing up for a great season and is working on ideas to not only attract new members, but to see how we can better serve our existing members.  If you are interested in working with this committee, please contact Brad Jessee brad.jessee@gmail.com

We would like to welcome the following new members to CMC!!!

Amanda Brown, Rebecca Fennewald, Pat Hanson, Robin Hargis, Joshua Hockett, Mitch McGonigal, Gregor Scoon, Jason Smallheer, and David Townsend.

CMC Softball

Yep, its that time, sign up for spring/summer softball is underway and I need to get our team in the books by the end of the month.  I still have the list of names from before, but just to make sure and finalize the list I would like to hear from everyone again who wants to play on the coed team.  It will be a lot of fun, the games will start in April and be on mondays, we will play 16 games.  The cost will be around $45-$50 per person depending on how many are on the team.  I would like to see more then less.  Everyone gets to bat and we can rotate the fielders.   The cost of the team is about $650, that covers all of the fees for umpires and fields

I NEED TO KNOW BY March 27th.  No later please.   I will send another email once I get confirmation about how many are playing about how to pay/etc.

BIKING TIPS

As the temperature rises and the days get longer, our desire to get off of the indoor trainer and experience some great spring weather will lead most of us out onto the roads.  Here are some tips regarding transitioning from ‘winter’ training to ‘spring’ training:

1.  Be sure to stick to your training plan.  Often times, we will scrap a prescribed workout in favor of a nice spring bike ride.  This is fine, but if you are preparing for an upcoming race, you have probably been following some sort of plan.  Skipping the planned workouts too often will diminish the effect of the training plan.  I’m all for swapping training days around so I can bike on warmer days, but don’t skip the recovery sessions or quality sessions when the weather gets nice.

2.  Make sure your bike is tuned up.  Make sure your tires are in good shape.  Indoor trainers can really damage tires, so you may want to replace that rear tire.  Also, make sure the brakes are aligned, gears are adjusted, and the chain is lubed.

3.  Don’t go crazy.  If you have only ridden 1 hour on your indoor trainer, don’t go out for a 4 hour ride on the first nice day.

4.  Enjoy yourself.  We have had a LONG winter and it will feel GREAT to get out and enjoy a nice bike ride in the warm sun.  Be thankful that you have the opportunity to pursue this wonderful sport.

Train happy,
