Kudos Report: October 2012

Oops, we’ve gotten way behind. CMC is so big, so fast, and SO FUN! Let’s try to catch up:

We missed Ken Welty in the Roots n Blues Half Marathon – his first! Welcome to the 13.1 club, Ken! And Lee Smith earned his 70.3 stripes at IM Branson – a tough first half! Congrats, Lee!

No rest for the weary, Lee Smith turned around and ran a PR at the MO’ Cowbell Half Marathon! Wahoo!

CMC showed up and took over the Sedalia Duathlon. In the short course: Kathy Archer 2nd, Kristen Fennewald 2nd, and Ken Welty 1st. In the long course: Chris Fennewald 2nd, Chris Jones 1st, and Uwe Lochner 4th. Way to go, guys!

Terry Rolan has been talking up the Tough Mudder for months, and it sounds like the day lived up to the hype. Team CMC had a great race: Ted Brandt, Corlin Clark, Jenny Clark, Maggie Johnston, and Terry Rolan. Big thanks to Teresa Tice for her support/photography! Jenny summed up the day: “10-11 miles of awesome muddiness, with too many to count obstacles of nearly every imaginable and unimaginable variety, swim through ice, run through fire, electrical shocks, barbed wire, under, over, through, carry, climb, slide, fall, trip, hay, logs, dirt, mud, jumps, a bit of swimming, laugh, jump, help each other out, good times. Highly recommended to all.”

Rock Bridge Revenge has become an annual must-do race thanks to tons of hard work by race director Jeff Wells and Co. With a 7mi and 25k option, there’s something for everyone in the beautiful park just south of town. The 7-milers: Michon Coats 5th, Rick Coats 3rd, Kimberly Earnest 1st overall female – with husband Brad Earnest just a step behind, Coleman Hodges 4th overall, Peggy Horner 1st, Anatolie Juncu 1st, Judi Kaufman 1st, Amy Livesay 5th (that baby’s sure to be a runner!), Suki Lycke 4th, Colleen Parsons 2nd, Amanda Reed with son Turner Reed 1st, Jon Rosen 1st, Erik Stone 2nd, Brian Tate 1st, James Trammell 4th, and David VanDyke 2nd. And the 25k-ers: Andy Emerson 5th overall, Tim Ferrell 5th (welcome home!), Shawn Goertz 4th, Karen Hodges 4th, Maggie Johnston 1st, Luise King 2nd, Craig Lycke 6th, Steve McIntyre 1st OVERALL (!), Rob Presnell 1st, Terry Rolan 1st (and a PR distance!), Beth Shepard 2nd, Matt Widzer 4th, and Rachael Wittenberger 3rd. Big thanks to volunteers Becky Hennessy, Karen Hodges, Bob Martin, and Paula Rawlings. Way to represent!!

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon series returned to St. Louis for a great fall race. Knocking out 26.2: Chris Jones, Keri Jones (4 weeks post-ironman!), Dearld Snider, and Tom Tomicki. Crushing 13.1: Sisters Heidi Crouch and Heather Figueiredo enjoyed the day together, Coleman Hodges, Cheryl Rathert, Doug Steinhoff, Alex Tomicki 8th (at age 14!), and Marzena Tomicki 4th (of 932!!). Great day all around!

And the same weekend, Ultramax brought the KC Marathon to life. Casey Buckman ran a strong 26.2. Emily Ridgeway, Christine Staelens, Bruce Vaughn, and Ben Wilson (his first!) pounded out 13.1. Nice job!

Andy Emerson‘s done more ultramarathons than most of us take steps in a day, but here was a first: an impromptu 100-miler?!? The Big Dog Backyard Ultra. Start the day not knowing how many miles you’ll run or how long it’ll take. It’s not even guaranteed there’ll be a winner, but he/she would also earn the title of the only one to finish. The remaining competitors run the same 4.16mi loop on the hour every hour until they miss the cutoff. And the last man standing, however long that takes, is the only finisher. Andy ran 25 laps in 21.5 hours for a total 104mi – and perhaps the world’s longest and fastest DNF. That’s incredible. Well done, Andy! Check out his blog post for the full rundown: http://ilove2runraces.blogspot.com/2012/10/2012-big-dog-backyard-ultra-death-match.html.

Over in Kansas City and beyond, Julie Higgins is tearing it up with her cyclocross bike. She’s had a fall full of racing – and podium finishes! Boss Cross, 360 Cup, Joules Cross…she’s doing it all and making it look easy! Keep it up, Julie!

CMC Sponsor Ultramax has added several new races to the lineup this year with all sorts of new themes and features. Most recently, the Black and Gold Run complete with color splashes during the 2-mile course. Nancy and Sidney Yaeger were there for the fun – and the run!

Monster Bike Bash is another super popular, super fun day on a bike on the Katy Trail. Grab your friends, your costumes, and your bikes, and gear up for music and laughs on the trail. Tam Adams, Kimberly Earnest, Karen Knowles, Lise Nyrop, Jon Rosen, Lisa Rosen, Stacy Turpin, and Cynthia Woodcock got into it and had a great time. Check out the event website for a video of Jon and Lisa taking their costumes a step further – on stage with a mic, and maybe a little tequila. 🙂

Capitol to Courthouse is just as advertised: run from the Capitol in Jeff City to the Courthouse in Columbia. 39.3 miles, either solo or as a relay. The CTC guys, including Tony Rigdon and Erik and Kevin Stone, stole the day and easily claimed first overall. The CTC gals, with Peggy Horner, Kathy Lee, Nancy Taube, and Lisa Wells, weren’t far behind and claimed first female team. Mike Tripp showed ’em all up and ran solo. Great race!

Several of them then took off for the Flats Trail Half Marathon in Kirksville the next day. Congrats to Karen Hodges 1st, Peggy Horner 2nd, Tony Rigdon 7th overall, Mike Tripp 3rd, Jeff Wells, and Lisa Wells 1st!

We all dream about a destination race…Carol Crooks and Stacy Turpin headed out west for the gorgeous Big Sur Trail Marathon and Half – with hills to match the views. Sounds incredible – and you guys did great!

Lisa Wells can usually be found running or paddling – or both! The Fall 5 at Perche Creek is a 2mi run/3mi paddle event, where Lisa was the 2nd women’s solo finisher! Awesome, Lisa!

Wyco’s Revenge mountain bike race brought Tom Hall out for his first MTB race in several years, but he’s still got it – he took 2nd overall! Sweet! Congrats, Tom!

Perhaps the biggest race in all of triathlon: Ironman World Championships! Representing CMC in fine form were Rodney Adkison, 10:22, and Mike Sutherland, 10:48! Dianna Adkison and Karen Rouse were there for the action with cowbell and cheers to keep ’em going through the heat and wind. AWESOME!!

For the photo of the week: Team CMC at the Tough Mudder: Terry Rolan, Ted Brandt, Corlin Clark, Maggie Johnston, and Jenny Clark! Fun in the mud!

The Countdown:

  • Marine Corps Marathon: 2 days (send some good vibes to Jake Simpson going for his first 26.2!)
  • Ironman Florida: 8 days
  • Ironman Arizona: 23 days

Keep us posted if you’re racing/cheering/playing, and share a photo of the fun you’re having.
